Former Aston Villa favourite Graham Fenton has added an FA Vase winners’ medal to the one he won at the League Cup final 21 years ago.
The midfielder was part of Ron Atkinson’s side that beat Manchester United 3-1 at Wembley prior to his £1.5m move to Blackburn Rovers.
Yesterday he was a Wembley winner for a second time, seeing his North Shields side who edged out Glossop North End 2-1 after extra time.
And the 40-year-old (pictured right) admitted it was a sweeter feeling winning as a manager than it was as a player alongside the likes of Tony Daley, Paul McGrath and Dean Saunders.
“The win with Aston Villa against Man Utd was hugely satisfying especially because I was only 19,” he said.
“But I am part of a group now and responsible for a lot more people. You are a little selfish and naive at 19 and the responsibility of helping these lads achieve their goal is highly satisfying.
The Northern League side came from behind to lift the trophy, goals from Adam Forster and Gareth Bainbridge – his 48th of the season – cancelling out a Tom Bailey effort for the North West Counties League champions.
Fenton added: “It was nervous at the end and we counted down every minute. But the character this team has and the heart they show every single week means it’s a pleasure to be around them.”Read More »
